Mr. Smith received a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) in 1971 and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) in 1975, from Utah State University in Logan, Utah. His Master's thesis was titled: "A Ranging System For the ARCAS Rocket". Mr. Smith's areas of specialty were communications theory and human/machine interfaces.

With an education that included chemistry, physics, laser mechanics, and mechanical engineering, Mr. Smith's broad experience gave him the expertise to excel in the engineering and design of a wide variety of electronic projects.

Mr. Smith currently holds several joint patents with other individuals. The patents are currently assigned to the funding or development organizations.
